South Dakota Republican Senator John Thune’s amendment to the annual Defense Programs bill failed in a US Senate vote. The measure failed to reach the required 60 vote minimum. The results were 58 for and 39 against.
Democrats are scrambling as their zealous stance against the Second Amendment continues to unravel and the pendulum of public opinion swings away from the stated desire of their far-left leadership to ban virtually all guns.

Sebastian at Snowflakes in Hell reported last week that conservatives were chafed at the NRA’s hands-off attitude toward the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court. Based on the NRA quote from The Hill, the NRA had decided to let the debate be framed by others and wait until the confirmation hearings – when in my opinion public sentiment would be cemented and little could be done to derail her – to raise objections.

Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are renewing the push for the Senate to ratify CIFTA, an international treaty that would create a national registry of American gun owners and make that registry available to other signatory countries. As an added bonus, American citizens in the database accused of wrongdoing in other countries would be eligible for extradition.
The treaty was originally signed by Bill Clinton, but never ratified by the Senate.

The opportunity for the Pennsylvania legislature to pass a bill that would impose a 5-cent tax on each ammunition shell and require each to be encoded with a serial number will expire in the House Judiciary Committee on Sunday. It could, however, be reintroduced as early as next January.
The requirements would cause the cost of ammunition to skyrocket, becoming unaffordable to most. Similar legislation has been introduced in 18 other states and DC, but none has yet become law.
“Gun-control advocates have realized that it would be nearly impossible to achieve an outright ban on firearms, whether at the state or federal level,” said [National Sports Shooting Foundation spokesman Ted] Novin. “Understanding this, they have recently turned to backdoor attempts at firearm prohibition — bullet serialization, which is a de facto ban on ammunition, is a perfect example of this legislative strategy.”

The production costs would make ammunition unaffordable to most people, Novin contended.

Nationally, such bills generally cover all ammunition, Novin said. But, he noted: “There are absolutely no studies to suggest it would work.”

Under [the] bill, older ammunition would have to be disposed of by Jan. 1, 2010.
After the Pittsburgh City Council passed one of those bizarre “must report your lost-or-stolen-gun” laws by a lopsided 6-1 vote, Councilwoman Tonya Payne took to the microphones to remind those of us who respect the founding documents of our state and federal governments exactly what we’re up against.
“Who really cares about it being unconstitutional?” said Councilwoman Tonya Payne, a supporter. “This is what’s right to do, and if this means that we have to go out and have a court battle, then that’s fine … We have plenty of dead bodies coming up in our streets every single day, and that is unacceptable.”
