It appears that the 16% hike in Pennsylvania’s Income Tax, championed by Democrat Governor Ed Rendell, is dead in the water.
Word of an impending announcement first came via the House Republicans’ Twitter feed around 5PM.
Republican Leader Sam Smith delivered the good news, to loud applause, at the press conference.
The Republicans say they have delivered a balanced budget that “funds essential government services with no tax increase” and could have been delivered to the Senate this weekend. The Democrats who control the House responded by removing Friday and the weekend from the legislative schedule.
The Republicans will present their budget amendment at a 10:30 AM press conference Friday. They say that, with a weekend vote off the table, it could be voted on as early as Monday. It remains to be seen whether the Democrats who control the House will employ further tactics to draw out the budget process into a crisis.
