The White House claims $159,000,000,000 in stimulus funds have been allocated as of September 30. Although their official numbers only show 640,239 jobs have been “saved or created” by the Stimulus as of September 30, the White House claims the real number is closer to one million.
OK, benefit of the doubt (not that there is much doubt that they’re lying). Even so, any idiot with a piece of paper or calculator divides $159 billion by one million jobs and gets about $160,000 spent for each job “saved or created.”
The White House claims that simple calculation is “calculator abuse.”
Jared Bernstein, chief economist and senior economic advisor to the vice president, called that “calculator abuse.”
He said the cost per job was actually $92,000 — but acknowledged that estimate is for the whole stimulus package as of the end of 2010.
Sounds like Bernstein is engaged in a little “truth abuse,” but that’s probably a job requirement if you’re working for the Vice President. Even the official number, published after the AP poked train tunnel sized holes in their preliminary figures, is in doubt.
[Stimulus Czar] DeSeve and Bernstein were not able to say how many of the 640,329 jobs were saved and how many were created. How do they know that government officials asking for stimulus funds to help prevent layoffs were legitimate?
“What we have to do is expect that our public officials are honest,” DeSeve said. “I know that’s a high bar.”
It is when Democrats own the Executive and Legislative branches.
And, even if we were to look the other way and treat their falsified numbers as real, they’re not the kind of jobs that we were promised when the Stimulus was passed in February. You know, the private sector jobs that actually spur economic growth.
Of the 640,329 jobs cited today, White House officials said 80,000 were in the construction sector and more than half — 325,000 — were education jobs, despite President Obama’s claim in January that 90 percent of the stimulus jobs would be in the private sector.
