More information is coming out about the Bush Administration plan’s to train CIA operatives in the noble art of killing terrorists that some say Dick Cheney ordered kept secret from Congress. The more we learn, the more it seems that Democrats, including Congressman Patrick Murphy, just don’t like the idea of killing terrorists.
Murphy, most famous for his crusade to turn “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” into “Please Ask And Then Tell Me Everything Real Slow In Graphic Detail,” appeared on CNN this weekend to decry the terrorist terminating operation.
The program, which actually was authorized by Congress and was public enough to be reported in the New York Times in 2002, was in the planning phase through most of the Bush years. Drew at Ace of Spades reports that the plug was pulled by Obama’s CIA Director Leon Panetta just as the plan was about to become operational.
The plan to kill top al-Qaeda leaders, which had been on the agency’s back burner for much of the past eight years, was suddenly thrust into the spotlight because of proposals to initiate what one intelligence official called a “somewhat more operational phase.” Shortly after learning of the plan, Panetta terminated the program and then went to Capitol Hill to brief lawmakers, who had been kept in the dark since 2001.
Why would we want to move killing terrorists into an operational phase? That’s just icky. Better to send some drones in and hope for the best.
So much time is spent worrying about how much of a disaster Obama is on the economy that we sometimes forget just how much of a disaster he is on foreign policy.
It’s very clear that information about the program was leaked to the New York Times and spun as a Bush Adminstration scandal because the truth – that this administration is not serious about fighting terror – would be obvious once all the facts came out.
