It could be typical Obama campaign incompetence, a ruse by the campaign, or some skilled but illiterate Photoshoppers at work, but a screen shot purporting to show a CNN story declaring Indiana Senator Evan Bayh as Barack Obama’s pick for the Vice Presidential nomination is making the rounds. I’m going with the Photoshopper option.
According to the story represented by the screen shot, word of the Bayh selection was mistakenly made public when a 21-year-old Obama campaign intern hit “send” instead of “save” on an email message meant to announce the pick on a future date.
Although it’s is not beyond the level of incompetence they’ve displayed so far to believe that the Obama campaign would trust dissemination of this announcement to a 21-year-old intern, there are a number of problems with the story that prove it false.
For all the planning and anticipation surrounding Barack Obama’s much-anticipated VP pick, it was the mistake of a 21-year old intern with the campaign that revealed the pick earlier than planned.
I’m sorry, but if a college graduate constructed that sentence, it sure wasn’t a professional writer. No one who writes for a living would write “anticipation surrounding Barack Obama’s much-anticipated,” and nothing about that sentence makes much sense. Then there’s this.
In a move to increase it’s mailing list, the Obama campaign had planned to give supporters a heads-up prior to the official announce through a massive e-mail and text-message campaign. In order to reduce the amount of work that had to be completed the day of the announcement, the campaign had maintained a generic email that only required the name of the pick to be filled in. But when the name of the pick - now known to be Indiana Senator Evan Bayh - was filled in, the aide working on the e-mail accidently pressed the “send” button, rather than the intended “save” button.
The email was released to about 400 supporters, those who had been first to sign up for the advanced notice campaign. A second e-mail, asking supporters to withold the information until Tuesday, was sent out approx. 20 minutes later, but not before CNN recieved more than a dozen tips about the mistake. Calls to the Obama Campaign…
Second, why would CNN break a huge story like this and then remove the story from their web site, necessitating that screen shots be taken and shared?
And the “updated” time stamp at the top does not match the font face or size of the date. Lastly, the title shown in the browser “Tab” at the top does not match the supposed title of the article.
Other than that, good job.
