Incompetence Derails Attempt at Manion Smear

You have to wonder about the level of desperation among the anti-Manion forces when their opening salvos of the 2008 8th District (PA-8) Congressional campaign include attacking Manion’s reverence for his fallen war hero son and this attack on routine campaign paperwork.

Former Republican Riegelsville mayor Todd Myers sent a letter to the FEC complaining about a Manion campaign event at Worth & Co. Inc. in March for which payment had not yet been publicly reported.

But because Myers’ letter was “improperly filed” (”the writer had put down an illegible signature and failed to include an address or phone number”), the FEC rejected the complaint as invalid.

When asked by The Philadelphia Inquirer if he had help from any Democrat organization in preparing the invalid complaint, Myers’ only response was a sheepish “No Comment.”

The Inquirer says they were alerted to the existence of the letter by the “Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.”

Republican Manion is trying to oust first-term Democrat Congressman Patrick Murphy.

Jerry Morgan, Manion’s campaign manager, said yesterday that a bill for $5,613 submitted by the Worth company had since been paid. But he declined to say when it was paid - before or after the recent complaint letter. The next deadline for federal candidates to report their financial activities to the FEC is July 15.

In a letter dated June 19, former Riegelsville Mayor Todd Myers, a Republican, called the March 25 fund-raising event to the attention of the FEC. Morgan said the campaign had not seen the letter.
