Freshman Democrats Get Party Funded By Credit Lobby

Credit Card companies Visa and US Bancorp (US Bank) are set to throw a party for freshman House of Representative Democrats like Congressman Patrick Murphy in Denver this afternoon that seems to flout the intent of recent campaign finance laws.

If you listen to your average liberal, credit card companies are downright evil, using their predatory practices to dupe folks into amassing huge amounts of debt at interest rates that are tantamount to highway robbery.  Don’t get in the way of a Democrat trying to live the high life off of those supposedly ill-gotten funds, though.  If you’re in between a Democrat and money that’s being handed out, you might get run over.

According to non-partisan watch group OpenSecrets.org, lobbyists and companies that lobby are prohibited from throwing convention parties for a single Representative, but a loophole in the law allows such groups to throw parties for groups of Representatives like the Democrat Freshman class.  No such loophole exists for Senators.

Because Visa and US Bank lobby Congress, the campaign finance reform group Democracy 21 has called for lawmakers to honor the intent of the new law and boycott the event. “Any freshman Democrat who does participate in the August 27 reception should be treated by the public and media as failing to comply with the language, meaning, purpose and spirit of the new House ethics rule,” the organization’s president, Fred Wertheimer, said in a statement.

According to campaign finance reports for Patrick Murphy, Li’l Pat has accepted $115,650 in contributions from the “Securities and Investment” industry and $42,000 from “Lobbyists” so far this election cycle as of July 28.

We should keep an eye out for a mention of whether Murphy attended this party.
