The results of a newly released Franklin & Marshall College poll show that Republican challenger Mike Fitzpatrick leads Democratic Socialist Party incumbent Patrick Murphy by a whopping 14% among likely voters in the PA-8 Congressional race.
Gosh, it’s starting to seem like Pennsylvania’s Eighth District voters don’t want a wildly liberal guy who votes against their wishes with Nancy Pelosi 97% of the time sitting in Congress claiming to represent them, or something.
The poll, which surveyed 464 registered voters last week and has a margin of error of +/-4.5%, shows Fitzpatrick leading Murphy by 10 points among registered voters, 46% to 36%. The split grows 4 points when only likely voters are considered, a sign that the enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats is again a factor in the race as it is midterm election nationwide.
For the record, that split is 49% to 35%. That’s right: Incumbent Murphy has only 35% support, while Fitzpatrick is at nearly 50%.
The numbers will likely send shivers down the spines of Democrats everywhere because many pundits have dubbed the 8th District race a national bellwether.
Shivers. I like that. I actually kind of got a thrill up my leg.
The president’s approval rating there is only 37 percent, a 17-point drop what he garnered in the ’08 election.
Murphy’s got plenty of dirty tricks up his sleeve, but it looks increasingly like local voters are so fed up with his far-left politics that the chances of them having any effect on their vote will be slim.
Murphy has a large fundraising advantage, and both candidates launched their opening TV ads last week. But Fitzpatrick is getting help from the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is funding an attack ad tying Murphy to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Obama’s stimulus package. Murphy hasn’t received that kind of support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
The DCCC has cut Murphy loose. Get that resume up to date, Li’l Pat.
