After winning the the Gold Medal in her event, US beach volleyball champion Kerri Walsh took the NBC interviewer’s microphone to deliver a personal message.
I just want to say thank you, Mr. President, for all you do. Thank you for your inspiration.
Walsh and partner Misty May-Treanor beat the top-seeded Chinese team in a painfully close match played in the pouring rain to win the Gold medal in their event, repeating their 2004 Olympic Gold medal win. No female beach volleyball team has previously had back to back Gold.
President Bush met with the pair during his trip to China at the beginning of the Olympic games. The duo taught the President a few volleyball moves, and May-Treanor offered her bikini’d rear to the President for a slap that volleyball teammates traditionally exchange after a particularly good rally. The President declined, tapping her on the back instead.
As Bush left the practice court, he implored the girls to “show me something out there,” to which Walsh replied, “We’ll make you proud.” In speaking to reporters later that day, she said, “What an honor. He’s just a great sports fan and he exudes optimism and pride in his country. We know he’s proud of us.”
