Bucks County residents seem resistant to buying into the Global Warming Myth. Despite the promise of a $10,000 solar panel for their community as a reward, only 1 of the 6 Bucks County communities participating in SmartPower’s Clean Energy Community program has met the registration goals for electricity generated by alternative means.  Half the communities are below 50% of the program’s required registration.

The 6 participating communities in Bucks are Doylestown Borough, Lower Makefield, Upper Makefield, Warminster, Warrington and Wrightstown.  Only Lower Makefield has met the goal.  Upper Makefield is 4 residents shy of their goal.  Wrightstown has 75% of their goal, Doylestown 40%, Warrington has 35% of the goal, and Warminster 28%.

When it comes to “Going Green,” we’ll choose the “Green” in our wallet thank you very much.

SmartPower’s campaign is a challenge to cities, towns, faith communities, educational institutions and businesses to convert to clean energy. The community must pledge to purchase 20 percent of its energy from clean sources by 2010, and 7 percent of residents and businesses (or a total of 200 for larger communities) within that community must sign up to purchase what’s called clean energy by the end of October.

Fred Suffian, the chairman of Warrington’s Environmental Advisory Council, doesn’t know why asking people to call up their utility companies and switch to alternative energy has been such a hard sell. The extra cost might be a factor. PECO Wind — the energy company’s option for buying into wind turbine-answered electrical service — costs the average homeowner about $10 more a month.
