Another “Fight The Smears” Lie Exposed: ACORN Edition

Damn you, inconvenient Internet!  Every time the Obama campaign attempts to lie on its “Fight The Smears” controversy whitewashing site, you prove it wrong.

Today’s “Fight the Smears” lie, that Barack Obama “was never” a trainer for radical vote fraud group ACORN and “never worked for ACORN in any other capacity” is disproved by a 2004 article (Case Study: Chicago- The Barack Obama Campaign) written by Toni Foulkes and published in the journal Social Policy. Although the publication threw this article (and, apparently, this article alone) down the memory hole, the Cleveland Leader says it’s still available through “proprietary scholarly databases” complete with a photo of Obama with ACORN members.

Cleveland Leader’s emphasis retained.

“Obama took the case, known as ACORN vs. Edgar (the name of the Republican governor at the time) and we won. Obama then went on to run a voter registration project with Project VOTE in 1992 that made it possible for Carol Moseley Braun to win the Senate that year. Project VOTE delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (ACORN delivered about 5,000 of them).

Since then, we have invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office. Thus it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for State Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress in 1996. By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends.

The newly unearthed information follows and verifies reports late last month linking Obama to ACORN’s Madeline Talbott and, therefore, linking Obama to one of the core reasons behind the current credit crisis.

ONE key pioneer of ACORN’s subprime-loan shakedown racket was Madeline Talbott - an activist with extensive ties to Barack Obama. She was also in on the ground floor of the disastrous turn in Fannie Mae’s mortgage policies.

[...]

When Obama was just a budding community organizer in Chicago, Talbott was so impressed that she asked him to train her personal staff.

He returned to Chicago in the early ’90s, just as Talbott was starting her pressure campaign on local banks. Chicago ACORN sought out Obama’s legal services for a “motor voter” case and partnered with him on his 1992 “Project VOTE” registration drive.

In those years, he also conducted leadership-training seminars for ACORN’s up-and-coming organizers. That is, Obama was training the army of ACORN organizers who participated in Madeline Talbott’s drive against Chicago’s banks.
