Alleged Plot to Kill Obama Thwarted

Details are sketchy and coming mostly from local Denver television news outfits, but it appears that police have broken up a 4-person plot to kill Presidential candidate Barack Obama Thursday night by shooting him from a high vantage point during his acceptance speech at the city’s Invesco Field.

Reports indicate the plot was uncovered due to a fortunate traffic stop on Sunday morning.  Police allegedly found all the tools of an assassination plot, as well as drugs, in a truck rented by Tharin Gartrell.

Police then went to a hotel to talk to an associate of Gartrell who was also wanted on numerous warrants. This man attempted to allude police by jumping out of the hotel window, breaking his ankle, and was subsequently arrested.

Another friend of Gatrell and the “hotel jumper” as well as a woman are all under arrest on weapons or drug charges and are believed by authorities to have been part of the plot.

UPDATE 8/26: Authorities believe man arrested with “two high-powered, scoped rifles in the car along with camouflage clothing, walkie-talkies, wigs, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope, licenses in the names of other people and 44 grams of methamphetamine” did not pose a “credible threat.”

In the initial story about this “plot” to kill Obama, authorities were not even certain whether this druggie biker even made a verbal threat to Obama.

The cops simply arrested them because law enforcement is on “heightened alert,” and because the suspect was swerving his rental truck.

When the TV station reporter from Kcbs ? caught wind of an arrest involving a rifle, he immediately concocted in his mind a “plot” by a white supremecist (sp?) motorcycle gang to kill Obama…. which fit his mental template of racist America.

The reporter then got his source, whomever that was, to utter a phrase indicating the suspect may have responded in the “affirmative” to a possible threat.

What the heck did THAT mean? That the suspect didn’t deny it forcefully enough the 37th time they asked him?

Once the Joint Information Center began getting calls about a possible threat, they certainly couldn’t just sit idly by and do nothing. They HAD to investigate these whispy rumors.

So it snowballed from nothing into an even bigger nothing.

Seriously, I can’t count the number of stories I’ve witnessed over the years from zealous reporters who start with their own conclusion, and then fill in the gaps with their OWN thoughts and quotes from selected anonymous sources.

    Smarmy business, that newspaper stuff.
