2010 Census To Public: “Are You A Negro?”

The 2010 Census form, approved by the Democrat Congress more than a year ago, asks respondents to identify whether or not they are a “negro.”

2010-censusRumor has it that Nancy Pelosi fought like hell for “colored person,” but it was ultimately judged as too offensive and out of date despite her passionate argument based on its use in the name of the NAACP.  So they went with the much more modern and acceptable term of “negro.”

OK, that rumor exists only in my fantasy world.  It’s a nice place.  You should visit some time.

Seriously, though.  Did someone at the Census Bureau just get their hands on a copy of the soundtrack to Hair and learn some new words or something?  What person that has left their house and interacted with others in society over the past 40 years could think this is OK?

For many New York blacks, the word conjures visions of Jim Crow and segregation – even if the Census Bureau says it’s included to ensure an accurate count of the nation’s minority residents.

“It’s a bad vibe word,” said Kevin Bishop, 45, a Brooklyn salesman. “It doesn’t agree with me, doesn’t agree with my heart.”

Pamela Reese Smith, visiting the city yesterday from Rochester, said the term was outdated.

“I don’t think my ancestors would appreciate it in 2010,” said Smith, 56. “I don’t want my grandchildren being called Negroes.”

Question No. 9 on this year’s census form asks about race, with one of the answers listed as “black, African-Am. or Negro.”

The Census Bureau said they went with it for the sake of inclusion.  Because nothing says “come on in, all are welcome” like the term “negro.”

“Many older African-Americans identified themselves that way, and many still do,” [Census Bureau spokesman Jack Martin] said. “Those who identify themselves as Negroes need to be included.”

I notice the space for white people just says “White.” Does Martin think black people who “identify themselves as Negroes” wouldn’t understand that they could, just this once, check off the “black, African-Am.” box and be counted properly?  Gosh, that sounds just a little…wait for it…raaaaaaacist.
